What happened
Election day started quietly. Bitcoin hovered near $76,900 on Tuesday morning after a dip to about $76,300, while U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs reported $399 million of outflows for Monday and Binance withdrawals since it reopened passed $4.7 billion (CoinDesk).
The evening was the jumpy part. Bitcoin climbed close to $78,000 late Tuesday, then fell more than $2,000 as the first results came in, briefly touching about $75,700 before bouncing (CoinDesk). Cointelegraph put the low at $75,618, a seven-week low, followed by a rebound to about $78,000 within three hours. It reported that Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate, and that close to $300 million of long positions were liquidated (Cointelegraph).
Other stories traders watched:
- A midterm pattern. CoinDesk noted Bitcoin went into this election above its 200-day average, unlike the 2014, 2018 and 2022 midterms (CoinDesk).
- Liquid made whole. The Liquid Network said its bitcoin reserves are fully restored, two months after a $320 million exploit (Decrypt).
